We have a copy of CheckPOInt v2.0.2 available on our downloads page. There is a newer version available which is kept up to date, but it utilise's a different sync source and many regular Pocket GPS Readers have found this to cause problems and have subsequently uninstalled version 3 or above and re-installed v2.0.2.

Sometime ago we reviewed the Mitac Mio268 DigiWalker SatNav system. At the time is was a dedicated system that was locked down so tightly we were unable to even take screen shots and had to rely on Mitac to provide the images for the review. That has all changed now Mitac has come together with our friends at www.navigating.de and created a POI-Warner system allowing 3rd party POI data to be imported into the SatNav application and also you can configure warnings as you approach a POI.

TomTom 5 has been out for some time now. One of the features that TomTom added was a POI Warning system. This was a big driving factor in the adoption of the PocketGPSWorld.com "Safety Camera" database on the range of TomTom GOs. Part of the problem of maintaining the database has always been the ease of capture of new camera data. Well thanks to Lutz that has all changed now. Lutz has created the PocketGPSWorld.com POICapture application specifically designed to record the location and details of Safety Cameras.

The Geodesy is small and compact, but has great potential. Most of the time the Geodesy just sits there on the dashboard with a blue led to show that it has a satellite fix, but isn't detecting any cameras in the vicinity. You will see on the left two LED's, one above the other. The bottom one shows if you don't have a fix (in red) and the top one shows blue if you have a fix and the Geodesy is in detection mode.

We recently received a review copy of TomTom Navigator 2004 (in the UK this is known as the HP Navigation bundle) and had a chance to compare its functionality to the older versions (3.07 in Europe, 2.24 in the US). Since TomTom Navigator 2.24 cannot open the newer maps I used a special version of TomTom Navigator 3.07 US – this way both applications use the same map data and I can focus on the application differences. (The only real difference between TTN2.24 and TTN3.07 is the itinerary mode.)

OziExplorer is PC software so why are we reviewing it here? Well the simple answer is that to create your own maps for use with OziExplorer CE you need the PC based product to calibrate the map files. OziExplorer is much more than just a map calibrator for OziExplorerCE as you would expect from the price difference. As this site is all about GPS for the Pocket PC this review will only concentrate on the features that are applicable to creating and analysing functionality for OziExplorerCE.

Maporama is a website I came across probably about a year ago. The maps weren't that great, but have been achieved upon considerably since I last looked. The maps are as good as most of the maps you'll find in products like AutoRoute, the difference being with Maporama, the maps are online, and you can either take a screen dump and crop them in your favourite paint package and save them as a JPG, or you can download them to your PDA via AvantGo. Either way producing a quick map for you to import into GPS packages like GPS Ideas.

TomTom Maps-on-Line is really is an ingenious product, and as far as we're aware is the first product of it's kind to produce maps complete for the whole of Europe in a single quick download. Maps On Line like Navigator uses the TeleAtlas maps. The maps that get downloaded to your Pocket PC are of two kinds. A complete map showing the journey from departure to destination, and turn by turn maps. You can zoom in and zoom out, however to be able to achieve this you do need a mobile phone because as soon as you try to do this, if the map isn't in the cache list it will try and download the map, so it really does require a GPRS connected phone to put Maps On Line to it's full potential, and preferably with a BlueTooth enabled phone and Pocket PC.

TomTom Navigator 2 like it's predecessor is not only a reasonably priced complete GPS product, but TomTom have really thought long and hard about what they are going to include with their product. Included in the box are TomTom Navigator Software CD, a universal PDA Mount, a windscreen suction mount with a huge suction cup to stop it falling off the windscreen, a vent mount, a dashboard sticky mount, and also a windscreen sticky mount if you'd prefer not to use a suction cup. This has to be the most complete GPS product on the market today, and we have to commend TomTom for thinking about what the average user may want or even require in their vehicle.

TomTom have been providing fixes via TeleAtlas for the maps since TomTom was released, but there are still quite a number of outstanding map errors that people are noticing. TomTom have said theyare investigating all of these matters that are reported to their support department and are fixing these with map updates as soon as possible! We thought it might be better to collate the problems and show comparison screenshots so it also gives TomTom more information to go on, as it is always easier to see the problem if you can see it rather than having it described to you.

This isn't a full out review on the Garmin GPSMap295, but a practical evaluation from a pilots point of view. This dedicated colour map aviation specific device is considered by some as being the ‘standard’ portable colour screen GPS system for VFR flying.

Since the announcement back in June of the new Garmin iQue, I've been quietly excited. The screenshots shown in all press releases make the iQue look just like a Street Pilot III Deluxe, at a lower price, but in PDA form rather than a bulky unit sitting on the dashboard, and since reviewing the Garmin Street Pilot III Deluxe in May 2003, I've wanted to get my hands on a Garmin iQue and put it through it's paces. PocketGPSWorld.com Garmin nuvi review. The name Garmin has always be synonymous with GPS, but this is more in the handheld and marine GPS fields. Some of the StreetPilots are a bit dated and a little behind the rest of the street routing market. This all changed last year with the introduction of the Garmin i3 and the Garmin Nϋvi. All of a sudden Garmin have catapulted themselves to the frontrunners in street navigation.

At present the 7xx range of Nuvi’s is Garmin’s flagship range (until the recently announced 8xx series is actually released!) and features a host of extras such as Bluetooth hands-free calling, FM transmitter, FM Traffic module (on the ‘T’ model’s only), Route planning (up to 500 WayPoints) with optimisation, GPS data logging, MP3 player, picture viewer, pin-lock, language guides etc etc etc…

In May 2003 we reviewed the Garmin Street Pilot III deluxe. This is a great removable in-car Satellite Navigation product, but Garmin has recently improved upon this by not only bringing out one product, but two new products. These are notably the Garmin Street Pilot 2610 and Garmin Street Pilot 2650 and a third is on it's way (Street Pilot 2620 which incorporates a pre-installed hard drive with maps!).
